How to Use the Sleep Calculator
Waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle causes sleep inertia, that groggy feeling that can last for hours. This calculator helps you schedule your sleep so you wake up at the end of a cycle.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1 Choose your mode: "I want to wake up at" or "I am going to bed at".
- 2 Enter your desired wake time or bedtime.
- 3 Click calculate to see recommended bedtimes or wake times for 4 to 6 sleep cycles.
- 4 Select an option that fits your schedule. The 5-cycle option is the recommended starting point.
Understanding the Inputs
Time
The time you plan to wake up (in bedtime mode) or go to bed (in waketime mode). Enter a time in 24-hour format. For example, 7:00 AM is 07:00 and 10:30 PM is 22:30. The calculator uses this as the anchor point to work backward or forward through sleep cycles.
How to find it: In bedtime mode, enter the time your alarm is set for or the time you need to be awake. In waketime mode, enter the time you plan to get into bed and start trying to sleep.
Why it matters: The anchor time determines the starting point for all calculations. A 7:00 AM wake up time with 5 cycles means bedtime at 11:15 PM. The same 5 cycles from a 6:00 AM wake up means bedtime at 10:15 PM. Even 30 minutes difference in your anchor time shifts all recommended times.

Mode
Choose whether you want to calculate bedtimes from a wake time (bedtime mode) or calculate wake times from a bedtime (waketime mode). Bedtime mode is useful when you have a fixed morning schedule. Waketime mode is useful when you know what time you are going to bed and want to set your alarm.
How to find it: Toggle the mode selector at the top of the calculator. The default mode assumes you know when you need to wake up and want to find the best time to go to bed.
Why it matters: The mode determines whether the calculator works forward or backward from your anchor time. Using the wrong mode produces times that do not match your actual schedule, which defeats the purpose of cycle-based sleep planning.

Tips & Best Practices
- ✓ Most adults feel best with 5 complete sleep cycles (7.5 hours of sleep).
- ✓ Consistent sleep and wake times, even on weekends, help regulate your circadian rhythm.
- ✓ The 15-minute fall-asleep buffer is an average. Adjust based on how long you typically take to fall asleep.
- ✓ Avoid screens, caffeine, and heavy meals within an hour of your calculated bedtime.
