A sleep calculator helps you find the optimal bedtime or wake time based on natural sleep cycles. Each cycle lasts about 90 minutes, and waking up at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle leaves you feeling more rested. By aligning your sleep schedule with your bodys natural rhythms, you can improve sleep quality without necessarily sleeping longer.
The Formula
Each sleep cycle is approximately 90 minutes. It takes about 15 minutes to fall asleep. Total sleep time = Number of Cycles x 90 minutes. Bedtime = Wake Time - Total Sleep Time - 15 minutes. Most adults need 4 to 6 complete cycles (6 to 9 hours) per night.
Example
To wake up at 6:30 AM feeling refreshed: Choose 5 sleep cycles (7.5 hours) with bedtime at 10:45 PM, or 6 cycles (9 hours) with bedtime at 9:15 PM. The 15-minute fall-asleep buffer is included in each calculation.
