How to Use the Tip Calculator

Whether you are dining out with friends, grabbing a quick lunch, or ordering delivery, knowing how much to tip should not require mental math. This tool handles everything in seconds.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1 Enter the total bill amount in dollars (e.g., 85.50).
  2. 2 Select your desired tip percentage. Common choices are 15%, 18%, and 20%.
  3. 3 If splitting with others, enter the number of people paying.
  4. 4 Review the calculated tip amount, total bill, and per-person share.

Understanding the Inputs

Bill Amount

The Bill Amount is the total charge for your meal or service before the tip. This includes the cost of food, beverages, tax, and any other charges listed on your receipt. A $60 dinner for two with a couple of drinks might come to $85.50 after tax.

How to find it: You will find the Bill Amount at the bottom of your restaurant receipt or invoice. It is the subtotal plus tax line, often labeled "Total" before the tip line. For group dining, look for the pre-tip total on the itemized receipt.

Why it matters: The bill amount is the foundation of every calculation. A $45 meal with 18% tip yields $8.10 in tip, while a $120 meal at the same percentage yields $21.60. Entering the wrong amount cascades into incorrect tip, total, and per-person splits.

Tip Percentage

The Tip Percentage is the portion of your bill you leave as a gratuity for service. In the United States, 15% is standard for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for excellent service. Some restaurants automatically include gratuity for large parties, often 18%.

How to find it: Tip percentage is a social convention, not a number on a receipt. If your receipt includes a "suggested gratuity" section, those percentages are a good reference. Your server or service agreement may also indicate if gratuity is already included.

Why it matters: Choosing the right percentage directly controls how much you tip. A 15% tip on a $100 bill is $15, while 20% is $20. Over a year of regular dining, that 5% difference adds up significantly. Understanding standard ranges helps you tip appropriately without over or under tipping.

Number of People

The Number of People field tells the calculator how many ways to split the total cost. When dining with friends or colleagues, each person pays an equal share of the bill and tip combined. Setting this to 4 means the total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly four ways.

How to find it: This is simply the count of people at your table who will split the bill. If you are dining alone, leave it at 1. If you are paying for the whole table as a host, also leave it at 1.

Why it matters: Splitting a $90 bill plus $18 tip (20%) among 3 people means each pays $36. Among 6 people, each pays $18. Getting the head count wrong means someone overpays or the person covering the bill loses money.
