How to Add and Subtract Time

Adding time to a clock reading looks easy and then produces a time that does not exist when you cross midnight. The fix is to do the arithmetic in minutes rather than on the clock face.

Skip the manual math. Enter your numbers and get the answer instantly.

Always Work in Minutes

Convert the start time to minutes after midnight, add or subtract your amount, then convert back. A day is 1,440 minutes, so anything outside that range wraps around, and a negative result wraps backwards into the previous day.

A Forward Example

Start at 09:00, which is 540 minutes. Add 90 to get 630. Dividing by 60 gives 10 hours with 30 minutes over, so the result is 10:30 on the same day.

Crossing Midnight Forwards

Start at 23:30, which is 1,410 minutes. Add 60 to get 1,470, which is more than a full day. Subtract 1,440 to get 30 minutes, so the answer is 00:30 the next day, one day later.

Going Backwards Across Midnight

Start at 00:30, which is 30 minutes. Subtract 45 to get minus 15. Add a full day of 1,440 to get 1,425 minutes, which is 23 hours and 45 minutes, so 23:45 on the previous day.

Negative Results Are Not Errors

A negative total simply means you have moved before midnight. Adding a full day puts it back into a valid clock range and tells you which day it landed on.

Adding Hours Instead of Minutes

If your amount is in hours, multiply by 60 first to get minutes. Adding 2.5 hours is adding 150 minutes, and going through minutes avoids any confusion about half hour increments.

Worked Example

Adding 90 minutes to 09:00 gives 540 + 90 = 630 minutes, which is 10 hours 30 minutes, so 10:30. Starting from 23:30 and adding 60 minutes wraps to 00:30 the next day.
