Understanding the Inputs
Expression
The mathematical expression you want to evaluate. Type directly or use calculator buttons for functions like sin(45), cos(60), log(100), ln(e^2), sqrt(144), 2^3, or 5!. For example, "sin(30) + sqrt(16)" evaluates to 0.5 + 4 = 4.5 in DEG mode.
How to find it: Build the expression in the input area at the top of the calculator. Use the numeric keypad for digits, the function buttons for scientific operations, and parentheses to control order of operations.
Why it matters: The expression is the exact problem you need solved. The calculator parses it and applies the correct order of operations. An accurately typed expression ensures the calculator gives you the mathematically correct answer you need.

Angle Mode
Sets the unit for trigonometric functions. DEG (degrees) means a full circle is 360 degrees, used in geometry, navigation, and everyday angles. RAD (radians) means a full circle is 2p, used in calculus, physics, and advanced mathematics.
How to find it: Toggle the switch or dropdown labeled DEG/RAD near the display. Textbooks will specify whether to use degrees or radians. Trigonometric problems in degrees use DEG, while calculus and physics problems often use RAD.
Why it matters: Angle mode fundamentally changes the output of sin, cos, and tan. In DEG mode, sin(90) equals 1. In RAD mode, sin(90) equals 0.894, a completely different result. Using the wrong mode is one of the most common calculator mistakes.
