How to Use the Day of the Week Calculator

Enter any valid Gregorian date to get the weekday in full, the ISO week number, the day of the year, the days remaining and the leap year status, and optionally shift the date by a number of days.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1 Enter the year, month and day. Month is a number from 1 to 12 and day is a number from 1 to the length of that month.
  2. 2 Press Find the day, or use Use today to fill the fields with the current date.
  3. 3 Read the weekday in full, then use the ISO week number and day of the year for reporting and planning.
  4. 4 To project a date, type a number of days into the shift field. Positive numbers move forwards and negative numbers move backwards.
  5. 5 Check the month hint to confirm how many days that month has, which is the quickest way to catch a mistyped date.

Understanding the Inputs

Year

The four digit year, from 1 to 9,999. The calculation covers both common and leap years and applies the century rules.

How to find it: Any year, historical or future. Dates before the 1752 British calendar change use the proleptic Gregorian calendar, which is what computing systems do everywhere.

Why it matters: The year drives the leap year check and is the largest term in the weekday algorithm, so entering the wrong year shifts the answer by days rather than by one.

Type: number · Default: 2026

Month

The month as a number from 1 to 12. The month determines both the offset used in the calculation and the number of days the month contains.

How to find it: January and February are handled specially because the algorithm treats them as part of the previous year, which is the step most hand calculations forget.

Why it matters: Month length varies from 28 to 31 days and changes with the leap year, so it is also what makes an impossible date such as 29 February 2023 detectable rather than silently adjusted.

Type: number · Default: 10

Day

The day of the month, from 1 to the number of days that month has in that particular year.

How to find it: Any valid day. Entering 29 for February is only valid in a leap year, and the calculator will tell you if the year is not one.

Why it matters: Validation against the month's real length is what stops an impossible date being accepted and quietly rolled forward into the next month, which would produce a confident but wrong answer.

Type: number · Default: 10

Tips & Best Practices

  • ✓ Use Use today rather than typing today's date, which removes transcription errors entirely.
  • ✓ Check the month hint first when the result looks wrong, since a day number beyond the month length is the usual cause.
  • ✓ Prefer ISO week numbers when talking to anyone using European systems.
  • ✓ Remember that 1 January can belong to week 53 of the previous year under ISO rules.
