To convert currency, multiply your amount by the exchange rate expressed as the target currency per one unit of the source. If the USD to EUR rate is 0.92, then 500 USD times 0.92 equals 460 EUR. The formula is always converted amount equals original amount times the exchange rate.
Step by Step: Convert 500 USD to EUR
Take 500 US dollars. Find the USD to EUR exchange rate, which is 0.92 euros per dollar. Multiply 500 by 0.92 to get 460. So 500 USD converts to 460 EUR. This is the midmarket result before any bank fee or markup, which is why the amount you actually receive can be lower.
Converting in the Other Direction
To go from the target currency back to the source, divide instead of multiply. If you have 460 EUR and the rate is 0.92 euros per dollar, divide 460 by 0.92 to get 500 USD. Reversing the operation confirms your original conversion was correct.
Why the Amount You Receive Is Lower
Banks, airport kiosks, and transfer services add a markup on top of the midmarket rate, often 1 to 5 percent, plus possible fixed fees. So a conversion that computes to 460 EUR at the reference rate might only deliver the equivalent of 446 EUR after fees. Always compare the total received, not the advertised rate.
Worked Example
Convert 200 GBP to USD at an exchange rate of 1.27 dollars per pound. Multiply 200 by 1.27 to get 254 USD. To reverse it, divide 254 by 1.27 to return to 200 GBP.
