Understanding the Inputs

Gender

Your biological sex assigned at birth. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation uses separate coefficients for males and females because men typically have more lean muscle mass and a higher metabolic rate at the same body weight.

How to find it: This is self reported. If you are intersex or on hormone therapy, consult a healthcare provider for the most appropriate formula selection. Most people know their biological sex without needing external verification.

Why it matters: Gender changes the formula coefficients significantly. A 30-year-old man and woman of identical height and weight will have BMR values differing by roughly 100-200 calories per day, with the male typically higher due to greater lean mass.

Age

Your current age in years. Age is a direct variable in the Mifflin-St Jeor equation because metabolism naturally declines with age, primarily due to loss of muscle mass and hormonal changes that begin around age 30.

How to find it: Simply enter your current age based on your date of birth. If you are close to a birthday, rounding to the nearest whole year is fine. No documentation is needed.

Why it matters: BMR decreases by approximately 1-2% per decade after age 20. A 60-year-old will have a noticeably lower BMR than a 20-year-old of the same weight and height, reflecting the metabolic slowdown that occurs with aging.

Weight

Your body weight entered as either kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb) depending on the weight unit selector. For example, 70 kg or 154 lb. This is a primary input in the BMR equation and should be as accurate as possible.

How to find it: Use a digital scale first thing in the morning after using the bathroom and before eating or drinking. For the most consistent readings, weigh yourself at the same time each day wearing the same amount of clothing.

Why it matters: Weight is one of the strongest predictors of BMR. Heavier individuals require more energy to maintain their body mass. A 10 kg difference can alter BMR by approximately 100-150 calories per day.

Weight Unit

Select whether your weight is in kilograms or pounds. Kilograms are the scientific standard for the BMR formula, but pounds are provided for convenience in countries that use imperial measurements day to day.

How to find it: Check the unit displayed on your scale. Most digital scales have a switch or button to toggle between kg and lb. Select the matching unit in the calculator so your weight is interpreted correctly.

Why it matters: Selecting the wrong weight unit will produce an incorrect BMR, potentially off by hundreds of calories. The calculator converts pounds to kilograms internally, so the final result is the same regardless of which unit you choose.

Height

Your height entered in centimeters (cm) or feet (ft) depending on the height unit selector. For instance, 175 cm or 5.75 ft (representing 5 feet 9 inches). This is part of the BMR formula alongside weight.

How to find it: Measure your height standing barefoot against a wall. Use a flat object (like a book) placed on your head to mark the wall, then measure from the floor to the mark with a tape measure for the most accurate result.

Why it matters: Height contributes to the BMR calculation because taller individuals have a larger body surface area and more metabolically active tissue. Two people of the same weight but different heights will have different BMR values.

Height Unit

Select whether your height is in centimeters or feet. Centimeters are standard for the formula, while feet are provided for imperial system users. Note that this expects a decimal foot value rather than feet and inches separately.

How to find it: Check the markings on your tape measure or measuring stick. Most medical scales include a height rod marked in both cm and feet/inches. Select the unit that matches your measuring tool.

Why it matters: Choosing the correct height unit is essential because a foot is much larger than a centimeter. Entering 5 feet as 5 centimeters would dramatically undercount your height and produce an incorrect, artificially low BMR.

Activity Level

Your typical physical activity level, ranging from sedentary (little or no exercise) to extra active (very hard exercise plus a physical job). Each level has a multiplier applied to BMR to estimate TDEE.

How to find it: Consider your average week rather than your best week. Sedentary means desk job with no exercise. Lightly active means light exercise 1-3 days per week. Moderately active means moderate exercise 3-5 days. Very active means hard exercise 6-7 days. Extra active means a physically demanding job plus daily training.

Why it matters: The activity multiplier has a massive impact on TDEE, ranging from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (extra active). For a BMR of 1500, that is the difference between 1800 and 2850 total daily calories. Overestimating activity is the most common mistake and leads to stalled weight loss.

  • Never eat below your BMR for extended periods. It is what your organs need to function.
  • Muscle mass increases BMR. Strength training raises your resting calorie burn.
